Better. Not More.

Cyclists have latitude to embrace a reset after the summer “racing” and build season comes to a close. It’s almost as if there’s an appointed time to pause in our relentless pursuits, a time to breathe in and to celebrate where things went right; and the opportunity to exhale and reflect on what needs to be done better.

That word, better, is key for me. There’s a distinction between better and more. I personally struggle with more ambition than I have physical and emotional bandwidth. The undisciplined pursuit of more often leads to less in the big picture of life. My ambitions are good and worthy, and I often find myself swept up chasing the rabbit that happens to be the most convenient; rather than the one that is most important.

The false narrative of, “If I can do it all, then I can have it all” is an illusion. I’d like to challenge you during this period of reflection to take a breath and figure out what points on your list are low priority enough to say, “no,” or at least, “not yet.” And then be able to more fully invest your “yes” on the essential. Let’s not fall prey to diluted contribution.

Did you know that an aircraft is off course more than 90% of the time? It’s true. It only reaches its destination because of constant course corrections, and that’s a good way to make our way through life. Check our course, make small corrections along the way, reprioritize, and move back towards the landing spot of what’s most important.

During the next 90 days what relationships, work, fitness goals, and adventures will you choose to prioritize? We need to fight back against the tyranny of the good to find what is truly great in life, because there are a lot of good things vying for our time. It’s vital to evaluate because if we don’t prioritize our life, someone else will.
